Green Smoothie Freezer Kits

Labels: , , , ,

I went to Sam's club.

And came home with many pounds of produce.

Question:
Have you ever noticed places like Sam's and Costco
not only sell fruit in enormous quantities,
but also that the fruit itself is abnormally large?

For example, look at the size of these blueberries.

I've included a lonesome goldfish cracker for reference. These blueberries are huge!

So I got home with my fruit haul and went to work.

I've been hooked on green smoothies for quite a while and decided to make some kits to keep in the freezer.

Each one includes:

This might look skimpy on the fruit but remember, the berries were enormous.

I froze an ice cube tray of Greek yogurt ahead of time. I can only do yogurt in small amounts
(lactose sensitivity) but I love how it makes the smoothie rich and creamy.
You could always add multiple yogurt cubes.

Adding oat bran and flax seed (1 Tbsp of each) boosts fiber and nutrition
and makes the smoothie a little more filling.

I used two (6oz) bags of baby spinach to make 14 individual servings. The drawback is the use of plastic bags. I really try to use less of that kinda stuff. Our packed lunches are trash free 99.9% of the time. But I just don't have freezer space for containers, so plastic bags it is. I just crammed them into a basket and shoved it in the freezer.

Then just dump the contents into the blender, throw in a scoop of protein powder, add 1 cup of water, milk, soy milk, or juice, and blend, blend, blend. Voila! Not that smoothies aren't already the easiest thing ever, but this? -- No excuses!! There are mornings when I double my smoothie and afternoons when one makes a great snack.

And I still have plenty of fresh fruit left to eat throughout the week!

Worth mentioning: though the flavor combination of my smoothie freezer kits is delicious, the color of the blended smoothie may not be all that appealing. Chances are, if you're putting spinach leaves in the blender, you're way past visual appeal anyway. Just know - the purple from the blueberries makes this green smoothie a little grey. For a prettier green smoothie, using mango, banana, pineapple, and spinach is also muy delicious. Just that Sam's didn't have mangos today.
